It’s that time of year again!
If you’re looking for new ways to get yourself or the seniors in your life into the holiday spirit, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s our list of seven Christmas activities for seniors to help enjoy the season.
7 Holiday Activities For Seniors
1. Try A New Holiday Recipe
If you’re looking for holiday activities for seniors, making a new holiday recipe can be a fun activity for the whole family to do together — all you need is the perfect recipe. We asked our StoryPoint Group Regional Executive Chef (and recent American Culinary Federation gold medalist!) to share one of his favorite seasonal recipes with us.
Here’s Chef Jon Bastianelli to show how he prepares this tasty dessert, Chef Jon’s Holiday Sabayon.

2. Decorate Your Home
It doesn’t have to be anything grand! A wreath, a bowl of peppermint candy, a holiday mat at your front door — small tokens of the season are a great way to get you in the holiday mood.
3. Visit Local Light Displays
To celebrate the season, drive through town and find the neighborhoods and streets with the best holiday light displays. For seniors, this is an accessible alternative to some light displays that require walking long distances in the cold. You can even grab your whole family, a cup of coca and play your favorite holiday music on the radio while you drive.
At StoryPoint Saline, a StoryPoint Group community in Michigan, residents and team members decked out the community shuttle in lights. First, they were in a parade, and then they drove around to see local holiday light displays. It was a blast!
4. Play Some Christmas Tunes
Music has the power to impact seniors’ health — mind, body and soul! While you’re going about your day, consider putting on your local Christmas station or pulling out your favorite holiday record. Before you know it, you’ll be humming and dancing along.
5. Donate To A Charity
In the spirit of the season, giving back is a great way to celebrate the holidays. Whether you’d like to make a monetary donation or donate your time, charities are always looking for donations and volunteers during this time of year.
6. Shop At A Holiday Market
Malls can be crowded, and department stores can be overwhelming. For your holiday shopping this year, find a local holiday market instead. Small businesses and crafters sell their holiday goodies there, and the local products they sell can make the perfect gift.
Many senior living communities, like one StoryPoint Group community, Independence Village of Midland, hosts their own holiday market with vendors handpicked to fit seniors’ interests. The community market included 20 vendors for holiday shopping, a soup buffet, photos with Santa, cookies and cocoa, live music, holiday carolers and even a litter of Christmas puppies!
7. Make A Holiday Photo Album
If you notice that you or your loved ones are feeling down this holiday season, missing family, friends or traditions from holidays past, consider making a holiday photo album. Gather pictures of your loved ones throughout the years and write down any stories that come to mind. It can be a great way to reminisce on the spirit of the season and a sweet memento to share with generations to come.
