At Independence Village of Ames
Our award-winning memory care neighborhood includes elements of our innovative Connection Points Memory Care Approach by StoryPoint Group to create a more personal and meaningful experience for our residents.
Destination Stations
These are interactive activities in neighborhood common areas. Chosen around our residents’ specific interests and needs — ranging from a wall-mounted xylophone to textured, touchable artwork.
Common Areas
Dining and activity spaces are located together to minimize confusion and maximize ease of access. A separate seating area is also available where residents can still hear and feel a part of the activity without being directly involved.
Color Card System
Our color card system helps employees quickly identify which stage a resident is at on their journey through dementia. Each color communicates the resident’s needs in that stage, so caregivers know how to best communicate, assist and connect with the resident.
Resident Biography
A short biography of each resident is located inside their apartment, allowing guests and employees to interact with residents in a more familiar and meaningful way.
Red Plates
We serve meals on red dishes because that color has the highest contrast against food — which is important since dementia causes visual-cognitive deficiencies. Studies show that red plates encourage residents to eat 25% more.
Revivify Program
Our Revivify Program uses essential oils to help stimulate residents’ appetites, which helps establish more comfortable, enjoyable mealtime routines.
Peace of Mind
For the safety of our residents, all doors are secured and require a key fob to enter and exit the memory care neighborhood. Team members regularly perform safety checks of all doors throughout each day.
