About Pella, Iowa
Pella is located in Marion County, Iowa. It’s situated 40 miles southeast of Des Moines and is notable for being the home of Central College, as well as hosting manufacturing companies like Pella Corporation and Vermeer Manufacturing Company.
The city was originally established by Dutch immigrants in 1847, and the name “Pella” is a homage to Pella of the Decapolis, an important refuge during the Roman-Jewish war. History plays a huge part in day-to-day life in Pella, especially with so many beautiful historic traditions, architecture and landmarks to see. To name a few:
- The iconic Vermeer Windmill is a fully functional 1850s-style windmill that stands an impressive 134 feet tall. This working windmill, recognized as the tallest in the United States, grinds wheat into flour using wind power.
- Pella Opera House, which was constructed in 1900 and renovated in 1990, is a prominent entertainment venue. Notable for its stained-glass windows and ornate tin ceilings, the opera house attracts visitors with its historical charm.
- The Molengracht Plaza features a variety of attractions, including shops, restaurants, a movie theater and a fully operational drawbridge.
- Pella is renowned for its annual Tulip Time Festival, a vibrant celebration of Dutch heritage. Taking place over three days during the first weekend in May, the festival showcases tulip gardens, performances, crafters, music, food and Dutch costumes. The highlight of the festival is the daily parades.

Where Residents Are Encouraged To Dream Big
At Independence Village of Pella and other StoryPoint Group communities across the country, we are always asking residents about their lifelong dreams. Why? Because of our Dream Big Initiative!
With this initiative, we sponsor residents’ dreams (both big and small!) and help to make them a reality. Here’s a look at a few of the Dream Big experiences we’ve pulled off at Independence Village of Pella:
John’s Dream Takes Flight
John worked for Pittsburg-Des Moines Steel as a welder, constructing huge water towers all over the country. In order for him to get to his work sites and to come home on the weekends, he purchased a 1946 Cessna 140 airplane. He later converted it into a floatplane to land on water and would use aircraft skis to land on snow and ice. He flew his wife to doctors’ appointments when she was ill and was always willing to give his children rides. He was very cautious with his daughter, but he might have been a little more playful doing loops and rolls with his sons!
John’s airplane was such a huge part of his life, and he misses flying every day. Which is why he was so thrilled when our Executive Director, Lindsay, told John they’d be chasing his dream of getting back in an airplane and flying. The photos of their trip are priceless, and they even captured their view flying over Independence Village, Lake Red Rock, Newton Speedway, Vermeer and Pella Corp.
John shared that, “Once a pilot has enjoyed the freedom of flight, it’s something you won’t ever forget.”
It was our honor to help John relive that experience and see him take to the sky again!
Visiting Coffee Cup Café
Margaret and her husband owned and operated the Coffee Cup Café in Sully, Iowa, until they retired in 1981. Margaret always wished that she could pay another visit to the Café, so that’s exactly what we did!
While we were there, we tried many delicious items on the menu, but the one that stole our hearts was the Dutch Lettuce Salad topped with Margaret’s very own warm Dutch dressing. Her homemade dressing recipe is still served today, and her salad was featured in “How to Eat Your Way Across Iowa This Summer,” according to the Des Moines Register.
It’s an honor to get to know our residents like Margaret. By listening to their stories and learning about their passions, we can help make their dreams come true.
