Whether we’re collaborating with local organizations to create and collect donations for active military members or showcasing the veterans in our own community, supporting veterans is important to all of us at Independence Village of Oxford.

Partnering With Miracle Quilts
How do quilts made at our community make their way to veterans around the world?
Miracle Quilts is an organization that creates handmade quilts for wounded troops and hospitalized veterans. These quilts offer warmth and comfort to veterans at the moments they need it most. They serve as a reminder of the love and support veterans have back home and remind them how thankful their country is for their service.
For fifteen years, Miracle Quilts has partnered with Independence Village and held their monthly meetings at our community. During these meetings, our residents enjoy a day of quilting with friends while they support a good cause.
“Veterans have a special place in the hearts of our communities, and Independence Village of Oxford is no exception,” said Laura Ashley, Independence Village of Oxford Life Enrichment Coordinator. “As the meeting point for Miracle Quilts, our community helps give back to veterans across the world.”
After a year of quilting at Independence Village of Oxford, hundreds of beautiful quilts created by our residents and the organization are displayed in a large showcase. Then each quilt is carefully packaged and delivered to veterans in need.
Some quilts are mailed to wounded soldiers fighting overseas, while others stay closer to home.
“Every other quilt, I personally put in my car and deliver,” said Miracle Quilts Founder, Carole Carroll. “I go to Washington, D.C., and we go to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. There’s a variety of V.A. hospitals down there. We also go to the United States Armed Forces Retirement home on the Northside of D.C.”
As they spread across the world, these quilts (and our residents’ hard work!) remind veterans that they’re not alone.

At Independence Village of Oxford, many of our residents are veterans or military spouses themselves. We’re thankful for the opportunity to get to know them, hear their stories and celebrate their service.

Activities and Events
We look for any excuse to celebrate our veterans! Whether that’s by supporting resident-led veterans clubs, hosting patriotic lunch and learns, or celebrating events like National Hug a GI Day and National Armed Forces Day, veterans have a special place in the heart of our community.
Honor Wall
If you’ve been to our community, you’ve probably seen our Honor Wall. This tribute is just one of the ways we honor those in our community who served our country.
The Honor Project features a photo and short biography describing our residents and their service. It aims to connect, unite and honor the veterans of our community. Every time we pass this wall, we’re reminded of the heroes that we’re happy to call neighbors and friends.
Veterans Day Brunch
Every year on Veterans Day, our community sets aside special time to celebrate those who fought for our country. We pay special tribute to the veterans in our community with an annual Veteran’s Day brunch celebration.
This event is a time to get together, celebrate our veterans and thank them for their service. We share a big chef-prepared meal, hear speeches and enjoy time spent together with residents and their families.
Mark your calendars because Veterans Day and our yearly brunch is coming up!
Donations
In preparation for this year’s event, we’re also gathering donations from the community for the VA Ann Arbor HealthCare System. We’ll be collecting donations of highly requested personal items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and other hygiene items.
