For 99-year-old World War II Veteran Bill Hoover, patriotism knows no bounds.
In September, the StoryPoint Fort Wayne North resident participated in an unforgettable Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., an experience he had been anticipating for years.
Bill had applied to go on the Honor Flight to visit the World War II monument seven years ago and kept waiting to hear back. Curious about the lack of response, team members from StoryPoint Fort Wayne North looked into why he hadn’t been contacted. And the reason was simple: the contact information was missing.
After that was resolved, Bill received a ticket for a flight the following week. He would finally achieve his dream, but not before a proper patriotic sendoff at StoryPoint Fort Wayne North, where residents and team members sang “America the Beautiful” as a tribute.

While serving, Bill was a stateside medic, treating soldiers returning from war. He came back home in 1947, but not without some emotional scars. Because of what he saw, heard, and felt during the war, he vowed to never get on another airplane.
But he did in September for the chance to see the memorial built to honor his fellow service members. While in Washington, Bill was greeted by several members of Congress.
He says the flight was worth the wait, and he encourages people to support nonprofit organizations that make Honor Flights possible for veterans. At the age of 99, he says he feels like he is just getting to see what the country is all about.
It’s not hard to figure out why people want to come to this country — just look around, he says.
