At StoryPoint Group senior living communities, every holiday, special occasion, and community event is an opportunity to come together and celebrate. Whether we’re celebrating a birthday, marking a milestone, or welcoming in a new season, there’s always a meaningful moment in our communities for our residents to look forward to.
Halloween is one of those opportunities for us to celebrate together. Every year, Halloween brings together millions to celebrate favorite traditions like dressing in costume, trick-or-treating, and enjoying some all-around spooky fun.
For many of our residents, Halloween is an opportunity to share stories of their own favorite Halloween pastimes and to celebrate with their own traditions. It’s these unique experiences that each resident brings that makes celebrating Halloween and other holidays in senior living so special.
Why We Celebrate Halloween
Every year, the 31st of October brings millions together to celebrate Halloween. With a variety of modern traditions, Halloween as we celebrate it today actually has more than one origin.
The first of these origins can be dated back to Samhain, a festival in ancient Celtic religion. For the ancient Celts, Samhain marked the changing of the seasons between summer and winter. It was believed during this transition of the seasons, spirits could enter the world of the living, and other supernatural boundaries waned. Historical evidence suggests that celebrations of Samhain included the lighting of large bonfires and dressing in costumes to ward off wandering spirits, otherworldly tricksters, and malevolent acts.
The next origin of Halloween can be traced back to All Saints Day. Declared as a holy day by Pope Boniface IV in the 7th century CE, All Saints Day was first celebrated on May 13. One hundred years later, likely to serve as a Christian substitute for the pagan Samhain festival, Pope Gregory III moved All Saints Day to November 1. The evening before All Saints Day came to be known as All Hallow’s Eve, and eventually, Halloween.
Halloween began to spread more in the U.S. by the latter half of the 19th century, when waves of immigrants arrived in America. In particular, Irish immigrants escaping the Greater Hunger popularized the holiday across the nation, introducing traditions like the carving of jack-o’-lanterns.

Halloween Activities for Seniors
Whether it’s time spent recalling favorite Halloween moments, or time spent making new ones, Halloween has many ways to celebrate.
Many seniors enjoy:
- Attending local community events and celebrations
- Passing out candy at trick-or-treating or trunk-or-treating gatherings
- Enjoying some no-carve pumpkin painting
- Crafting up spooky decor like this masking tape mummy
- Spending time together with family, friends, and loved ones
These activities bring residents together, foster social connection, and can help residents continue favorite traditions.
How StoryPoint Group Celebrates Halloween
Halloween at each StoryPoint community looks a little different, because every community reflects the interests, experiences, and personalities of its residents. Each experience created by our dedicated life enrichment teams encourage laughter, connection, and a sense of belonging — all while honoring the holiday that residents know and love.
Over the years, our communities have celebrated Halloween in many creative and meaningful ways.
At StoryPoint Prospect, residents once welcomed Halloween with a frightfully fun door-decorating competition. Residents at StoryPoint Bolingbrook brought their own crafting spirit, creating their very own witches’ hats while enjoying live music together.
Independence Village of Avon Lake celebrated the sweeter side of the holiday by passing out candy to local KinderCare kids for a trick-or-treating event. Independence Village of Grand Ledge had similar fun, bringing in local families (and even pups!) for trick-or-treating. Also welcoming local children, Meadow Lane residents celebrated Halloween with a boo-tiful performance from over 50 kindergarteners from Bad Axe Public Schools.
Residents at Danbury Wooster stepped up to judge a pumpkin-painting competition and decide whose entry squashed the others. StoryPoint Waterville shared similar fun, with creative pumpkin decorating displays ranging from a cast of barnyard animals to a box of donuts.
Whether residents are enjoying a creative Halloween craft, passing out candy, decorating pumpkins, or spending time with friends and family, every celebration is thoughtfully planned to make the holiday memorable.
